Companies in East Kent can now reduce their waste miles following the opening of a new Waste Transfer Centre at Otterpool, near Folkestone.
The new centre, commissioned and operated by Kent’s largest independent waste management firm Countrystyle Recycling, can handle 75,000 tonnes of commercial waste a year. The company sorts and segregates the waste before transferring it to its Ridham Docks facility in Swale for reprocessing. The news is a vote of confidence in the future demand for commercial waste management in East Kent.
“With construction companies facing increasing legislative pressure to reduce waste, yet often needing to transport it many miles from site, we made the strategic decision in 2023 to invest in a new waste transfer facility to serve East Kent,” said Andy Sibley, Chief Operating Officer at Countrystyle Recycling.
He added: “We are confident that this new centre will provide our clients with a more flexible and efficient solution for managing waste across East Kent and further strengthen our waste management footprint across the region.”

The Otterpool facility has been designed to manage the waste construction materials and residual waste generated by local and national housebuilders who are trying to deliver the 4,899 new homes across East Kent each year demanded by government. It will also provide a waste solution for companies and councils looking to breathe life into the area’s high street with new commercial and retail development to support the local economy.
The new Waste Transfer Centre incorporates the latest fire suppression and prevention technologies. It uses infrared cameras to monitor waste bays and a 500,000-litre water tank with foam additive to manage fire risks, specifically targeting lithium battery fires, to keep the 10-12 staff on site safe. Ten HGVs on site and their drivers will be based on site, which will operate two weighbridges. It will provide an effective waste management solution for companies operating across parts of Ashford, Dover, Folkestone & Hythe, and Thanet and operate 0700-1800hrs Monday to Friday, and 0700-1300hrs on Saturdays.
The steel frame was built by Lanes, the specialist steel fabricator based in Hailsham, with the building constructed by Kent-based Chartways. Countrystyle was able to call upon additional support from its fellow companies within the Heathcote Group, including FGS Pilcher, FGS Plant and Four Jays.
