This Week’s Kent Business News

➡️ Aegis Energy consults Dartford on clean multi-energy hub

Aegis Energy is consulting the Dartford community on plans for a clean multi-energy hub at Littlebrook Business Park, close to the Dartford Crossing. The proposal would support HGVs and vans with electric charging, HVO refuelling, overnight parking and driver welfare facilities, while also making provision for logistics, warehousing and manufacturing space.

Subject to planning consent, the site would form part of Aegis Energy’s initial five-location network for commercial vehicles. The company says the Dartford location could help fleet operators move away from diesel on a major freight route, support local jobs and improve facilities for drivers. Residents, businesses and other stakeholders are being invited to contribute feedback before a planning application is submitted.

➡️ Employment-status ruling carries business warning

The conclusion of a ten-year legal dispute between football referees and HMRC has underlined the care businesses need to take over employment status. Although the Supreme Court found mutuality of obligation and a framework of control, the First-tier Tribunal later concluded the referees were not employees for tax purposes, and HMRC chose not to appeal.

Azets says the decision reinforces that employment status is a holistic judgement, rather than a checklist based on individual contractual features. Businesses engaging consultants, contractors and other independent professionals should examine the real working relationship, including freedom to accept work, the source of any controls and the practical commercial arrangements surrounding each engagement.

➡️ Iran conflict raises borrowing concerns for SMEs

The continuing conflict in Iran is adding to borrowing and cashflow concerns for Kent small businesses, according to Azets debt advisory specialist Mark Barrie. He says uncertainty around interest rates, alongside higher lender pricing and fewer lending options, could curb investment at a time when many firms already face pressure on margins and confidence.

Manufacturing, logistics, haulage, hospitality and construction are among the sectors described as particularly exposed. Barrie advises business owners to review forecasts and cashflows before taking on new finance, while noting added pressures from fuel, energy, National Insurance, wages, supply-chain disruption and cautious consumer spending. Firms in difficulty are urged to seek professional advice promptly.

➡️ Azets responds to July insolvency statistics

Corporate insolvencies reached 1,931 in July 2026, up 4.5% on June, according to official figures cited by Azets. Restructuring and Insolvency Partner Chris Tate says rising costs, debt collection and limited rescue options are leaving more directors short of time and choices, with Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidations a principal driver of the monthly increase.

Azets points to a difficult mix of high operating costs, cautious spending, geopolitical uncertainty and creditor pressure, including HMRC’s increasingly assertive recovery activity. The firm also highlights strains in retail, property and construction. Its advice to directors with financial concerns is to speak to a restructuring or insolvency adviser early, while options can still be properly considered.
