Farmers across Kent are discovering the benefits of going green, saving thousands on their energy bills while helping reduce the county’s carbon footprint.

One local horticultural business, CS Horticulture, recently explored renewable energy options for their site. By installing ground mounted solar panels, they were able to generate clean, on-site energy and significantly reduce operational costs. The system, featuring 400-watt solar panels paired with a Growatt inverter, produces 2.4 kilowatts of power and includes an adjustable angle mechanism to maximise efficiency throughout the year.

Kent farmers now have flexible ways to adopt solar energy. Some opt for a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) through companies such as Sunpower Services, allowing them to benefit from renewable energy without upfront costs. Others prefer to invest directly in a ground mounted solar panel system, which can be purchased through providers like Solarvault.

By switching to solar, farmers not only cut energy bills but also contribute to a greener Kent. With more agricultural businesses embracing renewable energy, the county is taking meaningful steps toward a cleaner, more sustainable future - one farm at a time.

Sustainability efforts in Kent’s agricultural sector aren’t stopping at energy. British soft fruit growers could reduce their carbon footprint by up to 40% by switching from imported coconut coir to a new recycled alternative, cutting both emissions and water use while maintaining yield - a development that’s drawing attention across the region. Trials led by crop science experts Niab, in partnership with Kent‑based Overland and funded by Growing Kent & Medway, have shown that recycled coir performs as well as fresh material on real farms and can significantly lower carbon emissions.
