A care home in Maidstone is celebrating after one of its team members won big at a prestigious national awards ceremony.

Brian Thornton, Maintenance Manager at Care UK’s Invicta Court on Gidds Pond Way in Weavering, was named the ‘awesome ancillary worker’ at the 2026 Stars of Social Care Awards.

Hosted by This Morning’s Josie Gibson, the awards shine a light on brilliance in social care and pay tribute to the people who go above and beyond to support those who are most vulnerable. This category recognises those in non-care roles – such as maintenance and housekeeping – who work hard to make a difference to residents’ lives.

Brian said: “When I saw the high standard set by my fellow nominees, I felt both privileged and honoured to be attending the awards ceremony. Then to hear my name called out as the overall winner was far beyond my expectations and it came as a complete shock!

“I love that I am able to rekindle special memories for residents here at Invicta Court and receiving recognition on this scale is a huge bonus.”

Praised for his creativity, Brian is known for listening to residents’ life stories and turning them into memorable experiences. Working alongside his wife Amy, the home’s Lifestyle Lead, he frequently brings history to life through his inventive displays and themed activities.

One standout example saw Brian recreate a ship’s cabin as a surprise for a resident’s 90th birthday, reflecting her memories of travelling to Kowloon, Hong Kong, in the 1930s to marry her navy husband. He even contacted the original church where she was wed and arranged a personal message from the vicar, which featured in a video celebrating her life.

Sara Barbosa, Home Manager at Invicta Court, said: “This recognition is a fantastic reflection of Brian’s dedication and the positive impact he has on life here.

“These awards celebrate those who truly go the extra mile, and Brian does that every day by helping residents enjoy meaningful and fulfilling experiences. It’s rare to see a Maintenance Manager bring such imagination and passion to their role, and his commitment never goes unnoticed.

“Together with Amy, Brian is constantly developing creative ideas that provide joy and connection to everyone in the home.”

Invicta Court offers full-time residential, dementia and nursing care, as well as short-term respite care, in luxurious surroundings. The home has its very own hair and beauty salon, bar and cinema room, and the highly trained team delivers an excellent standard of personalised care.
