A specialist surgical microscope has arrived in Sevenoaks to help save the sight of pets across the county and the South East.

The high-spec ophthalmic microscope has been installed at South East Veterinary Referrals (SEVR), a custom-built specialist-led veterinary hospital, as part of a major investment in advanced eye surgery for dogs and cats.

The equipment, which had to be transported under controlled conditions due to its size and specification, will be used to carry out intricate procedures including cataract removal and delicate corneal surgery. For pet owners facing the distress of a sudden eye injury or progressive vision loss, it means they now have access to cutting-edge treatment closer to home.

The arrival of the microscope coincides with the appointment of internationally recognised veterinary ophthalmologist Richard Everson as a director at SEVR’s Sevenoaks site.

Richard, who completed his specialist training at the Royal Veterinary College before working at a large multi-disciplinary referral centre in Surrey, is now offering a specialist level ophthalmology service within an independent veterinary referral hospital.

His work includes cataract surgery, the treatment of corneal ulcers and other corneal disease, management of feline corneal sequestra, tear film disorders such as dry eye, and emergency ophthalmic cases. Consultations are priced at £350, with written estimates provided upfront, and a detailed price list available on the practice website.

Speaking about the move, Richard said: “The focus on patient care and outcomes were key factors in my decision to join SEVR. For dog and cat owners, eye problems can deteriorate quickly. Conditions such as cataracts linked to diabetes, deep corneal ulcers or trauma can threaten sight in a matter of days. Until now, many complex cases had to be referred to specialists that were often outside Kent. We will offer a seamless pathway closer to home, whilst ensuring pets are returned to their usual vet for follow-up care.

“For Kent pet owners worried about a cloudy eye, redness, discharge or sudden vision changes, early assessment is critical. With a well-equipped ophthalmology service now based in Sevenoaks, more complex procedures can be carried out closer to home, potentially preserving sight and improving quality of life for pets across the county.”

Francesca Taylor, referrals director at SEVR, said: “Our role is to complement, not compete with, local practices. Cases are managed efficiently, communication is prompt, and patients are returned to their referring vet for ongoing care, strengthening long-term client relationships.”

SEVR is the South East’s only independent specialist-led veterinary hospital, and it has already built a strong reputation for its neurology service led by Dr Rodolfo Cappello. To date, the neurology team has performed 220 MRI scans and more than 100 spinal surgeries, earning referrals from across Kent, Surrey, Sussex, London and Essex.

Francesca added: “The same referral model, including direct access for vets to speak to the specialist, rapid reporting and continuity of care back to the primary practice, is now in place for ophthalmology with Richard’s appointment and our investment in this new specialist service.”

To support veterinary practices across the region, SEVR is hosting an evening CPD session on diabetes and cataracts in Sevenoaks on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, from 7.30pm to 10pm. The session will explore diabetes physiology and cataracts in dogs and cats, including corneal sequestra, and is open to vets and nurses across the South East.

Vets and nurses can register for the free CPD.
