Kent Business News Updates…

➡️ Three Peaks Conquered For The Pilgrims Hospices

Two young lawyers from Furley Page, Rosie Eastwood and Tom Swann, completed the Three Peaks Challenge in under 24 hours, climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales. They raised £4,130 for Pilgrims Hospices, beating their £3,000 fundraising target.

The challenge was tough, with heavy rain and river crossings, but they pushed through for the cause. Furley Page chose Pilgrims Hospices as their 2025 charity to mark the firm’s 300th anniversary. Read the full story here.

➡️ Darcy Group Celebrates 90 Years With Move To Employee Ownership

The Darcy Group, a Kent-based environmental protection company, has marked its 90th anniversary by becoming 100% employee-owned through the creation of an Employee Ownership Trust. This move secures the company’s future, honours its long-serving staff, and ensures its core values and culture remain intact.

Founded in 1935, Darcy has evolved from producing emulsifiers to leading in pollution control and environmental monitoring, supplying clients across the UK and internationally. The business includes four specialist brands covering spill response, oil dispersant systems, pollution monitoring, and marine recovery. Managing Director Richard Proctor says the change gives employees a real stake in the company’s success and positions the firm for long-term, sustainable growth. Read the full article here.

➡️ HMRC Names 518 Employers For Minimum Wage Breaches

Hundreds of UK companies, including 14 in Kent, have been publicly named by HMRC for underpaying staff - even by just pennies per week.

A new report reveals £7.4 million in unpaid wages, affecting nearly 60,000 workers nationwide. With HMRC increasingly vigilant and penalties potentially severe, businesses face significant financial and reputational damage if found non-compliant. Read about the common pitfalls, how you can avoid costly mistakes, and why even minor errors can have major consequences. Read the full story here.

➡️ New Survey Reveals How Age, Intent And Trust Influence Online Search Behaviour

Reflect Digital’s latest SearchPulse survey shows that online search habits in the UK are becoming more complex, with people using different platforms depending on age, intent and trust.

Google remains the top choice for 84% of Brits, but younger users are increasingly turning to platforms like YouTube and TikTok, especially for learning new skills. AI is growing slowly, mostly used by 25–34 year olds in sectors like tech and marketing, while older people and public sector workers are less likely to trust or use it. The report warns that a one-size-fits-all approach to search is no longer effective. Businesses must now tailor their marketing to different platforms and audiences or risk falling behind. Transforming a Traditional Brand

Rajiv Varma is the Managing Director of Rochester based Veetee Foods, a leading UK-based food company with a rich history of providing high-quality rice and innovative convenience meals to households around the world.

Under Rajiv’s leadership, the company has significantly expanded its product range and market presence, spearheading a shift from being a commodity rice business into a dynamic global ambient foods brand.

Record-Breaking Growth

Since taking the helm, Rajiv has steered Veetee Foods toward exponential growth, with the group achieving a turnover of £136m in 2024, branded UK&US sales up from £37m in 2023 to £47m in 2024 – an impressive 25% increase year-on-year – and ambient branded foods driving sales growth in excess of 40%.

This financial success is a testament to Rajiv’s strategic foresight and commitment to expanding Veetee’s product range, including the highly successful Steam Filtered rice trays, which have quickly become a leading product in both the UK and US markets. With projections aiming for a turnover of £170-180 million by 2026, Veetee is poised for even greater expansion, capitalising on its strong market presence and innovative product offerings.

Innovation on the Menu

Rajiv’s approach to growth has focused on the development of convenience meals, including the launch of the HUNGRYHEADS range, which has already shown early success.

The company’s international expansion, including a major facility in the US set to begin production in 2025, reflects Rajiv’s commitment to building a global brand. His leadership has also been crucial in Veetee’s success in markets such as the Middle East, South Africa, Australia, and India, where the company operates a 40-acre site.
