This Week’s Kent Business News

➡️ Kent Employers Face Fresh Payroll Risk Under Tougher Wage Enforcement

Kent employers are being told to check payroll records after fresh National Minimum Wage rises and wider enforcement powers raised the stakes for minor mistakes. Azets, says many firms fall foul of the rules through technical errors rather than deliberate underpayment. From April 2026, the minimum wage increased to £12.71 for workers aged 21 and over, £10.85 for 18 to 20-year-olds, and £8 for 16 to 17-year-olds and younger apprentices. Azets says small issues, such as unpaid pre-shift time, incorrect working hour calculations or deductions linked to staff savings schemes, can still push pay below the legal floor.

The warning comes as HMRC continues National Minimum Wage investigations on behalf of the new Fair Work Agency, created in April 2026, before the body takes on a wider role across holiday pay, unlawful deductions and other workplace rights. Azets says employers can be forced to repay six years of arrears at today’s rates, face penalties of up to 200% of what is owed, and deal with extra tax, National Insurance, pension and interest costs. The agency will also have powers to enter premises, inspect payroll systems and require payment within 28 days. For Kent sectors with irregular hours, staffing and tight margins, weak records could quickly become an expensive problem.

➡️ What Living With MS Taught One Founder About Better Business

A Kent business owner has shared how living with Multiple Sclerosis reshaped the way she works, plans and grows a business. At first, the diagnosis brought the same fears many people face after life changes: concern over lost independence, reduced options and an uncertain future. Over time, those fears gave way to a different way of thinking. Managing MS, alongside rebuilding after divorce, forced a sharper focus on time, energy and priorities. That shift now sits at the centre of her business approach. Rather than chasing every opportunity, she argues that steady progress comes from doing fewer things well, sticking to simple routines and concentrating on what matters most.

That thinking also shapes how she views change, technology and support. Living with MS has made adaptability a daily habit, and that has proved useful in business as markets, tools and customer needs keep moving. She now uses artificial intelligence as a practical aid to organise ideas and reduce cognitive strain, but believes technology works best when guided by human judgement and care. Her experience also reinforced the value of community, which led to the launch of Property Powwow Community, a Kent-based property education platform built around calm, supported learning.

➡️ Birketts Expands South East Real Estate Team With Senior Hires

Birketts has strengthened its real estate practice with two senior appointments, adding fresh weight to key parts of the business as it grows its reach across the UK. Edward Auger has joined as Partner in the firm’s Sevenoaks-based South East commercial real estate team, becoming the first Partner appointment in that office for the practice. With more than 20 years’ experience, he brings a broad background in secured lending, residential and commercial development, landlord and tenant work, and advising investors on property portfolios. His arrival gives Birketts a more senior commercial real estate presence on Kent’s doorstep and adds momentum to the firm’s push further into the South East market.

At the same time, David Roberts has joined Birketts’ Cambridge residential development team as Legal Director and Head of Living Assets. He has nearly 30 years’ experience advising developer clients, with a strong focus on funding and development work in the build to rent sector. Grace Kerr, Head of Real Estate, said both hires would add to the firm’s existing strengths and help support clients across commercial real estate and residential development. Auger said Birketts’ continued growth and full-service offer made the move especially attractive, while his appointment in Sevenoaks marks another clear step in building the firm’s regional base.

➡️ Why The UK Charity Model Is Facing A Real Test

Europe’s charity sector is large but fragmented, shaped by national laws, donor habits and different ideas about public oversight. Unlike the UK, most European countries do not have one visible regulator, so reporting and transparency vary widely from place to place. Giving remains strong, with regular donations common across the continent and foundations playing a major role in funding research, social programmes and new ideas. Digital fundraising is growing fast, and charities are working together more often across borders as they respond to shared pressures including migration, climate change and humanitarian need.

The UK presents a sharper, more tightly regulated picture, with more than 160,000 registered charities and a strong tradition of small local action. That public framework brings clearer governance, but it has not protected organisations from rising costs, weaker grant income, staff strain and growing demand. Against that backdrop, Hub & Spoke, created by Dr Bill Moses MBE MA and run day to day by Laura Hardy and her team, has arrived at a critical moment. In its first month it has already supported a significant number of charities, earning thanks for practical help and steady guidance. With roots in Dover Counselling Centre and decades of leadership behind it, the venture is quickly becoming a trusted support service for organisations trying to hold together essential work under pressure.
