➡ It’s Nearly Here…⬅
Last week we mentioned we’re building something big for Kent businesses.
We’ve been busy finishing it behind the scenes, and it’s almost ready.
A few Kent businesses have already seen it, and the feedback has been great.
The goal is simple.
To make it easier for people across Kent to discover great local businesses.
On Monday we’ll reveal what we’ve been building and start inviting a small group of founding members to be part of the launch.
➡️ Keep an eye out for Monday’s newsletter.

Hi {{first_name | Kent Business Community}}
Welcome to Thursday’s edition of the Kent Business Newsletter.
This week, we’re focusing on progress, growth, and big Kent moments. You’ll read how Bedfont Scientific is marking International Women’s Day by celebrating the women shaping its future, and why leadership balance is becoming a real performance advantage in Med-Tech.
We’ve also got senior leadership moves at Kings Hill based Chartway as it sharpens delivery and governance, plus a major project win for Canterbury contractor DBSJ with the opening of Conductor, a new flexible workspace at Westfield Stratford built around wellbeing and better office conditions.
Career wise, Furley Page has opened applications for its August 2027 trainee solicitor intake and summer placements. Elsewhere, Emma Youell Design lands in the UK’s Top 100 SMEs, Tassells is shortlisted for four Probate Industry Awards, Leo’s Angels strengthens its advisory board to improve epilepsy care, and Sevenoaks launches complex pet eye surgery locally at South East Veterinary Referrals.

This Week’s Kent Business News
➡️ Women Powering Progress At Bedfont

Bedfont Scientific Limited, a Kent-based Med-Tech firm with 49 years of experience in medical breath analysis, is marking International Women’s Day by celebrating the women shaping its future. This year’s theme, Give to Gain, reflects the company’s belief that equal access to leadership leads to stronger performance. Women now make up 50 percent of Bedfont’s workforce and nearly half of its 18 managers. The company says balanced teams support better decisions and steady growth. In 2026, International Women’s Day marks 115 years of action on gender equality.
Across Europe, progress remains uneven. Women account for 40 percent of Switzerland’s Med-Tech workforce, yet hold just 24.4 percent of leadership roles in the 78 largest medical device firms. Bedfont’s leadership says representation matters for the next generation and for business results.
➡️ Chartway Strengthens Leadership To Support Long Term Growth

Kings Hill based Chartway has promoted David Murphy to Chief Operating Officer and Simon Whelan to Chief Compliance Officer, as it sharpens its focus on delivery and governance across the Group. David joined in May 2025 and has already reshaped site delivery, commercial management and team collaboration. With a background in PLC housebuilding, he has pushed to professionalise operations. He now takes charge of all housing delivery, covering technical, pre development, commercial, construction and customer care.
Simon steps into his new role after three years improving processes, accreditations and internal standards. He will oversee compliance, health and safety, quality, ESG and sustainability across the Group. The moves support Chartway’s long term plan to build a resilient business where teams work closer together and raise standards.
➡️ Conductor Opens At Westfield Stratford Delivered by Canterbury’s DBSJ

A new 37,416 sq ft flexible office space has opened at Westfield Stratford, delivered by Kent contractor DBSJ and designed by Studio Multi. Conductor centres on a light-filled glass atrium and mixes private offices, desk space, breakout areas and a quiet library zone. Showers, generous communal areas and a central staircase aim to support movement and wellbeing. The concept focuses on creating a ‘third space’ between home and the corporate office, giving you a place you choose to spend time in.
DBSJ managed the full design and build, from early structural changes and lift works to installing mechanical, electrical and sprinkler systems. The project followed BREEAM principles and Considerate Constructors Scheme guidelines. Recent research shows 71 percent of workers would attend the office more often for better conditions, and 66 percent would commit longer for a superior experience.
➡️ Furley Page Opens 2027 Trainee Solicitor Applications

If you want a career in law, your next step could start now. Furley Page has opened applications for two trainee solicitor roles beginning in August 2027, with a deadline of 10 July 2026. The firm says these places are competitive, and past trainees have gone on to senior roles, including Partner and Head of Team positions. Many have built long term careers at the firm.
You will complete four six month seats over two years, working across areas such as Corporate, Dispute Resolution, Employment, Real Estate, Family and Private Client. If you have not finished the Legal Practice Course, you can join as a Graduate Solicitor Apprentice, earning while you study for the SQE. A one week summer placement for up to 10 students also opens, starting 9 June 2026.
➡️ Emma Youell Design Named In UK Top 100 SMEs
Emma Youell Design Ltd has been ranked 95th in the Elite Business 100, placing the Kent-based creative studio among the UK’s top small and medium-sized firms. The annual list reviews hundreds of entries from across the country, judging businesses on growth, innovation and community engagement. This year saw a sharp rise in applications, with judges praising the high standard and strong sales performance across the board. The company will attend the awards evening in St Paul’s, London on 11 March and will feature in the EB100 digital guide and online directory.
Founder Emma Youell described the past two years as a whirlwind, following wins at the Kent Business Awards and recognition at the Lloyds British Business Excellence Awards. She said she never expected her small animation studio to gain national attention. The business provides motion graphics and video editing services and now joins a select group recognised for excellence within the UK SME community.
➡️ Tassells Shortlisted For Four Probate Industry Awards

Tassells has been shortlisted in four categories at this year’s Probate Industry Awards, marking a strong moment for the firm and its team. CEO Marc Goddard has been named a finalist for the Unsung Hero Award in recognition of his leadership and steady work behind the scenes. Jo Masson is shortlisted for Paralegal of the Year, reflecting her professionalism and the care she shows clients and colleagues. Both nominations highlight the people who help shape the firm’s culture and standards.
The Private Client team is also in the running for Estate Planning Team of the Year and Boutique Probate Law Firm of the Year, an award Tassells won last year. The shortlistings recognise technical skill, client focus, and consistent service. For a small firm, the impact is clear and hard earned.
➡️ Leo’s Angels Strengthens Board To Transform Epilepsy Care

You are seeing a memorial fund turn grief into action. Leo’s Angels, set up in memory of Leo Alan O’Brien who died in 2024 from Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy, has appointed healthcare policy expert Jenny Ousbey to its board of advisors. The fund focuses on using technology to improve epilepsy care and save lives. It was founded by Leo’s mum, Emma O’Brien, CEO of digital consultancy Embridge Consulting, after she faced fragmented systems while caring for her son.
Jenny is CEO of health communications agency OVID Health and a former political adviser to a UK health minister. She has helped secure investment in dementia research and improve access to medicines for rare disease patients. Now she will support Leo’s Angels as it develops tools to improve clinical decision-making and reduce treatment delays.
➡️ Specialist Eye Surgery Launches In Sevenoaks

You no longer need to travel outside Kent for complex pet eye surgery! South East Veterinary Referrals in Sevenoaks has installed a high-spec ophthalmic microscope to treat serious eye conditions in dogs and cats. The equipment will be used for delicate procedures such as cataract removal and corneal surgery, including emergency cases where sight can be lost within days. Consultations cost £350, with clear written estimates provided upfront.
The launch coincides with the arrival of veterinary ophthalmologist Richard Everson as a director at the hospital. Trained at the Royal Veterinary College, he will handle cataracts, corneal disease, dry eye and trauma cases. SEVR says pets will be treated locally and then returned to their usual vet for follow-up care.

Cyber Safety For Kent Businesses
Jason On Cyber
What If someone had a copy key to your building
Most people imagine cyber attacks as alarms, pop-ups, and systems going down.
That’s not how it works anymore.
Modern attacks are quiet.
Someone gets access. Watches. Waits.
And small things start changing - emails, logins, payments.
In this episode of Jason on Cyber, I explain:
• What to actually look out for
• Why most businesses miss the signs
• And what real prevention looks like
No jargon. No scare tactics. Just reality.
